De facto couples, while representing a well-established reality, only received legal recognition in 2016 with Law No. 76 (known as the Cirinnà Law). The legislation distinguishes between civil unions – reserved for same-sex couples – and de facto cohabitations, recognized for heterosexual couples or those not bound by marriage or a civil union.
